Key Features

The Bear Mountain Bridge Deck Replacement Project focuses on several critical improvements. The new deck will use modern and more durable materials and systems to extend the bridge’s service life. Sidewalks will be widened to at least 5 feet to meet ADA standards and better accommodate pedestrians. Other enhancements being evaluated include anti-climb fencing, improved drainage systems, and barriers that meet modern standards for height and safety. Additionally, new overlooks will be installed at the towers to provide pedestrians a safe and accessible space to enjoy the scenic views. The project also ensures compliance with environmental regulations and the National Register of Historic Places.

Project Vision

Environmentally Sustainable

  • Advanced drainage systems to protect the Hudson River and surrounding ecosystem.

  • Conducting environmental reviews to balance necessary upgrades with environmental preservation.

Future Focused & Innovation

  • Modular deck replacement ensures safety and durability for both vehicles and pedestrians.

  • Wind tunnel testing and structural enhancements accommodate new features like anti-climb fencing and widened sidewalks.

  • Sidewalk expansions improve multi-modal accessibility, making the bridge a connector for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Healthy Communities and Recreation

  • Scenic overlooks and widened sidewalks celebrate the natural beauty and historical significance of the Hudson Highlands while promoting active transportation.

  • Aesthetic upgrades preserve the bridge’s historical role while meeting modern safety standards.

Environmental Review

The New York State Bridge Authority has completed its State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR) for this project. The agency issued a Negative Declaration on May 14, 2025, confirming that the planned deck replacement, sidewalk widening, drainage upgrades, and safety improvements will not cause significant environmental harm. No Environmental Impact Statement is required.

Public Involvement

Community engagement is a priority for this project. Previously held public meetings and open houses offered opportunities for residents to learn more and share their input. Upcoming newsletters, social media updates, and this website will provide regular updates with designs and features that will help the community visualize the improvements. The project team will also address concerns such as traffic management, noise, and construction timelines.

Community Updates

It is our priority to keep the community informed as the project progresses. We will share information regarding milestones achieved and upcoming public events. Please find presentations from previously held Public Meetings and an Open House.
