The New York State Bridge Authority is undertaking a major deck replacement project on the Bear Mountain Bridge to help preserve the long-term safety, reliability, and functionality of this historic Hudson Valley crossing.

Construction is expected to last approximately 32 months, with a Notice to Proceed issued on May 1, 2026, and substantial completion anticipated by December 2028. El Sol has been selected as the project contractor.

To keep the bridge open to traffic throughout construction, the project will be completed in three carefully planned phases. During each stage, traffic patterns will shift to allow crews to safely perform work while maintaining access for motorists and pedestrians. Drivers should expect changing lane configurations, reduced speeds, and occasional overnight traffic controls as work progresses.

This page will provide updates on each construction phase, traffic pattern changes, and important traveler information to help motorists safely navigate the work zone. Visitors are encouraged to check back regularly for the latest project updates and travel advisories.

Construction Phasing for Stage 1:

Work will begin on the southern portion of the bridge.
The south lane will be closed.
The sidewalk will be closed.
Traffic will be shifted onto two lanes on the northern side.

Construction Traffic Control for Stage 1:

Throughout the project, traffic patterns and traffic control measures will change as construction progresses. On the east side of the bridge, existing yield signs will be replaced with hard stop signs to better manage cross-traffic during construction activities.

For certain demolition operations on the narrow span, the project team is evaluating temporary one-lane alternating traffic during off-peak hours, such as weeknights between approximately 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Extended weekend operations may also be considered based on traffic conditions and coordination with Parks agencies.

The use of temporary traffic signals is also being evaluated to improve traffic flow and allow emergency vehicles to clear the bridge quickly if needed.

As part of the temporary work zone setup, eastbound traffic will be shifted left, towards the mid-span.

As part of the temporary work zone setup, westbound traffic will be shifted slightly to the right, over the shoulder, to accommodate eastbound traffic using the center portion of the bridge.
